Monday, 26 December 2011: In a bid to stress unity among the people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala following the escalation of the Mullaperiyar dam dispute recently, BJP workers of both states yesterday formed human chains at three places along the Tamil Nadu-Kerala borders in Coimbatore and in Palakkad in the neighbouring state.
Participating in the human chain at Walayar, located along the border, former union minister and senior Kerala BJP leader, O Rajagopal, appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to immediately intervene and take steps to find an amicable solution to the issue.
“Without heeding to rumours and misinformation campaign by certain vested interests, people of the both the states should work for unity and cordial relationship,” he said.
Since long, many Keralites, including himself, had been visiting the temples in Palani and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, while many Tamilians had been offering worship at the Guruvayur and Sabarimala temples without any obstacle, he said.
Earlier in the day, BJP workers marked the 88th birthday of former prime minister, A B Vajpayee, by forming human chains at two places at Pollachi area in the district.
Friday, 16 December 2011: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday said the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu should meet on the vexed Mullaperiyar Dam issue at the earliest to chalk out an amicable settlement.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at Sanik School at nearby Kazhakkoottam, he said the two Chief Ministers should take an objective view of various aspects of the issue during the meeting.
“The foremost thing is that the two Chief Ministers meet and chalk out an amicable settlement. The meeting should discuss the cost, benefit and safety of the dam”, Kalam said.
The centuries old relationship between the people of the two states should not be broken over such an issue, he added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Kerala had no agenda on the Mullaperiyar issue other than safety of the people.
“We have no secret agenda. We have only one agenda and that is the safety of the people”, he said in Kasargode.
Monday, December 12, 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today alleged that a move was on to create a rift between the two neighbouring states Kerala and Tamil Nadu citing the Mullaperiyar issue.
Speaking to the reporters after inaugurating the mass interaction programme at Pathanamthitta on Monday, Chandy added that such kinds of attempts are unfortunate. He also opined that an amicable solution to the issue should be reached as early as possible.
Kerala is united in giving water to Tamil Nadu. There are no different opinions on this. Kerala is showing utmost restraint in these provocative situations. He said this at the inauguration of the mass contact programme in Pathanamthitta. The mass contact programme received 41,000 petitions.
