Policeman who burnt policewoman to death, dies

MAVELIKKARA: Ajas (33), the traffic police constable who was under treatment for burns he sustained while setting ablaze policewoman Soumya Pushkaran, died a few hours ago. He had sustained 40 percent burns.
He has been under treatment at the government medical college hospital in Alappuzha.

On Tuesday, the doctors said that the functions of his kidney and lungs were not normal. The doctors had started dialysis then. With 60 percent burns, he had been in the isolation ward of the Medical College hospital.

Meanwhile, Soumya’s cremation will take place on the premises of her house on Thursday after 10 am. The body, currently kept at a private hospital in Ochira, will be kept at Vallikunnam police station for public viewing at 9 am. After that, the body will be taken in a mourning procession led by Student Police Cadets to her house at Ooppenthara.

The other day Ajas was also placed under suspension.
Soumya Pushpakaran was a Civil Police Officer (COP) at Vallikkunnam station in Mavelikkara. According to police, Ajas, who was attached to the Aluva traffic station, allegedly followed the woman in a car when she was on her way back home after work in the evening.
He knocked her two-wheeler down and allegedly hacked her with a sharp weapon and as she tried to seek refuge at a nearby house. He chased her, poured petrol over her and set her ablaze.
She died on the spot while the policeman was taken into custody. A native of Vallikkunnam here, Soumya was staying with her three children. His husband is abroad.

Medical student collapses, dies

VELLARADA: A first year MBBS student of Karakkonam Medical College collapsed and died in her hostel room on Monday. She was Meenakshi (20), the daughter of Technopark employee Madhavan and KSEB Executive engineer Bindu, residents of Kowdiar Muttada Lakshmi Nagar house number 23.

Though she was soon shifted to medical college casualty department by her classmates and hostel staff, she was declared brought dead.    

She had been at home for study leave for the past three weeks. It was only on Monday morning around 7 that her parents took her to the hostel as the model exam started during the day.

Her parents later received her body after autospy was condcuted on it. 

Child falls off giant wheel, dies

PATHANAMTHITTA: A five-year-old child on Thursday fell off a rotating giant wheel and succumbed to the injuries. The incident happened at Chittar in Pathanthitta. The dead has been identified as Pathanamthitta native Alan. He along with his parents,  where attending celebrations organised as part of Onam.

Student falls off train, dies

KOTTAYAM: A student fell off the moving train on Thursday and died on the spot. The dead was Rajan’s son Rahul, a resident of Shankumugham in Thiruvananthapuram. The mishap occurred on Ernakulam-Palakkad Amritha Express at around 1:30 am.

From Thiruvananthapuram, Rajan and his son Rahul were going towards their relative’s house in Ernakulam.
Rahul was standing near the door of the train when it reached Pannimattam near Kottayam Chingavanam. He is known to have dozed off when he slipped and fell off the train.

Though the train was stopped pulling the chain and an attempt was made to rescue him, his life could not be saved.
The rescue operation was carried out by RPF oficials, passengers and Railway employees.

Chingavanam police reached the spot and initiated further action. The body has been kept in Kottayam Medical College hospital.

Sub-editor falls into waterfalls, dies

KOZHIKODE: Sub-editor P Jibin of Malayalam daily Deepika drowned in a waterfall in Iravanhipuzha at Kodencherry in Kozhikode on Tuesday.

Sources said 30 year old Jibin, posted with Kozhikode unit of the daily, had gone to Kodencherry Iravanhippuza Arippara waterfall along with his friends for swimming.

He slipped and drowned in the waterfall around 1200 hrs, sources said.

Man who attempted suicide after sedating wife and children, dies


VENJARAMOODU: A man who was admitted in the hospital after he tried to set himself on fire by dousing kerosene on his body died here Sunday. He took the extreme step after sedating his wife and children by giving sleeping pills. The dead identified as Sathyan (50) of Vattappara died last night at the medical college hospital.

Sathyan offered juice mixed with sleeping pills to his family last Tuesday. His wife Vatsala (48), daughter Divya (20), son Vishnu (17) and a relative Nithya (28) are undergoing treatment. 

Migrant labourer falls down from building, dies


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  A labourer from outside Kerala, on Monday, fell down from the top of a school building and died. The dead has been identified as Vayyakhan, 25, from Assam. The incident happened around 12 midnight at the top floor of a new school under construction near Vettukkadu church.

According to the information the police got from his co-workers, he was talking on his mobile phone and accidentally fell down from the top floor. The body is kept at Medical College mortuary.

Woman falls in water pit, dies

POTHENCODE: A woman while drawing water from a watery pit fell into it and died. She has been identified as Sudha (46) of Ayirooppara.  The woman, an employee of Kinfra Apparel Park, used to draw water from the pit regularly for her household purposes. The local residents came to know about the incident after her husband Ambili Kumar yelled seeing his wife’s pot and slippers near the premises. The body fished out by the fire force from Kazhakoottam has been shifted to the mortuary. The couple has two daughters-Ashwathy and Athira.

S Balaramran collapses, dies

KOLLAM: Former acting chairman of human rights commission Dr S Balaraman died here Monday. He was also the head of the panel entrusted to study the problems of nurses.

He died after collapsing in front of the ATM counter in the district. Even though he was taken to the hospital, his life could not be saved.

Youth falls from train, dies


ALAPPUZHA: A 24-year-old-youth died falling from train while trying to rescue his dog. He fell from the train and died when he tried to rescue his dog from falling early Sunday morning near Mararikkulam.

The youth has been identified as Vishnu of Alappuzha. Police said the incident happened while he was proceeding to Alappuzha after buying the dog from Palakkad.

Grama panchayat member collapses, dies



HARIPAD: CPM member Monica Lazer and Viyyappuram grama panchayat president collapsed and  died Monday morning while sweeping the courtyard. She was the wife of late Lazer Augustine. She leaves behind her children Monsy, Josy and Siby.

CPM activist collapses, dies



PALAKKAD: A CPM activist identified as Shanmugham aged 45, of Nayarangadi, collapsed and died during a protest march staged in connection with the hartal. The incident happened at Anchumurthi in Vadakkancherry.


In Alappuzha, protesters owing allegiance to the CPM attacked the vehicle of Alappuzha DCC president. They also attacked the office and the scooter parked in the front of it.

Howrah youth falls into well, dies


HOWRAH, WEST BENGAL: Rescuers Monday pulled out the body of the youth who fell into a well in West Bengal's Howrah district, more than 10 and half hours after he fell into the well.


Rausan Ali Mondal, a mason by profession, slipped and fell into the 30-feet deep well at Eksara village in Howrah district at around 3.30 pm Sunday. Sadly this incident happened, just a few hours after rescuers pulled out the body of four-year-old Mahi from a deep borewell in Haryana where she was trapped for the last four days.


West Bengal Disaster Management and Fire Services minister Javed Khan, who supervised the operations, said some local well diggers along with disaster management and Fire Brigade personnel pulled out the body from the well at around 2 am and rushed to Howrah State General Hospital where doctors declared the youth 'brought dead'.


The minister said a postmortem would be carried out. Khan said the rescue team had taken the help of close circuit cameras and advice of metro engineers to locate the body in the narrow well.


The Fire minister dismissed complaints of late response by fire brigade personnel and the disaster management team in reaching the spot after the incident.


"No it (late response) is not true. It is the creation of the media. The fire brigade personnel reached the spot within 15 to 20 minutes after the distress call received from the Howrah district administration at 04.35 pm," Khan told reporters.

Teacher falls off building in Kozhikode, dies


Friday, February 10, 2012: A 28-year-old private school teacher has allegedly committed suicide after jumping off a three-storied building near Kodencherry here on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Siyad, hailing from Thalasserry, jumped off the Alakkal building, police told. Siyad was working as the spoken English teacher of Kodencherry Saint Mary’s school. The incident took place at 2.30 in the morning.
The local residents immediately informed the matter to the police and Siyad was rushed to the Medical college hospital. He succumbed to injuries later.
Siyad was living on rental basis in the same building.

Cop falls off train near Palakkad, dies


Thursday, February 09, 2012: A 51-year old Sub Inspector belonging to the Beypore coastal police station died after he fell off a running train near Pattambi here on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Thangarajan, hailing from Kollam, police told. It was not immediately known whether he had slipped or jumped from the train. Thagarajan who sustain grievous injuries died on the way to hospital.
