Don’t put the chair under pressure via gestures, says Speaker

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The speaker of the assembly gave a ruling asking not to put the chair under pressure through gestures. His request made the members laugh when the members lifted their hands seeking a chance to ask sub questions during question hour.

Even though making active the question hour is a happy thing, almost 40-45 persons are lifting their hands for sub-questions. More members sought chance yesterday for asking questions on tourism projects. More members will get a chance if the question and answers are shortened, he said. 

Not working according to anyone’s wish, says Speaker

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan has countered Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala’s allegation that he was working as per the instruction of the chief minister. “Speaker is not working to as per the wishes of the ruling front or the Opposition,” he said.

Chennithala had alleged that the Speaker was no ready to accept the rights of the Opposition and he was worked according to the chief minister’s eye gestures.

“The Speaker abides by rules. It is unfortunate that the Opposition is dragging the assembly proceedings to the street even as the speaker is not functioning against rules. Sufficient time is allotted to the Opposition leader in the assembly.  During the question and answer hour other activities are not allowed. Even during the terms of previous governments, the Opposition leaders were given time to talk during answer sessions. As this is the case, it is not right to spread wrong impressions. In future also, all the rights of the Opposition will be protected,” the Speaker explained.  

Distributing laddu in assembly was wrong, says Speaker

CHANGANASSERY: The act of distributing laddu in the assembly by the ruling members soon after the budget was presented was wrong, said Speaker N Sakthan.Food items are banned inside the assembly and violating that is a serious lapse, he said.

Talking to reporters after calling on NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair, he said, “I went to the chamber soon after the budget presentation and so didn’t see it. Later came to know that laddu was distributed in the assembly. I had explained in the assembly that the act of the ruling front was wrong.”

Action was taken for damaging the mike and the computer after barging into the speaker’s dais. Action was taken against those entering the dais. He termed as wrong that action was taken against a section of the MLAs. The speaker functions unilaterally and he refused to react on women MLAs complaint

Oppn act a criminal offence, says Speaker

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:   Speaker N Shakthan termed the opposition act damaging the speaker’s chair in the assembly as a criminal offence. Talking to reporters after visiting the chief marshal’s house which came under attack, Shakthan said no situation was there to topple the chair and damage the computer and the mike.

The opposition MLAs went to the ruling MLAs seat and attacked them. Then naturally they would have responded and it is quite natural. I did not see the distribution of ladoos after the budget. A report on the incidents will be submitted to the governor. It is normal increasing the number of watch and ward during assembly session, he said.

Performance audit for MLAs soon, says Speaker

Saturday, September 03, 2011: Speaker G Karthikeyan today informed that a performance audit would be conducted in the Assembly for assessing the functioning of the MLAs.
Karthikeyan added that a final decision on increasing the allowances of the present MLAs as well the ex- MLAs would be taken soon after receiving the report from Justice Rajendra Babu commission.
The performance of each MLAs in the Assembly would be assessed individually and the details will be published in the website, Speaker said.
