Kochi: The Vigilance today said that former Excise minister K Babu, who was booked in bar bribery allegations, had contacted his benami Baburam through phone and there is proof for that. The vigilance said that both maintained contacts several times and the vigilance has evidence to substantiate that.
The recent revelations came to light when the Vigilance was interrogating Baburam today at the Vigilance office. After verifying Babu's tax statements, he would be called for interrogation, Vigilance stated.
Earlier, the Vigilance had said that Kumbala native Baburam was a benami of K Babu and scrutinizing the documents it was found that he had land at 41 places in Thripunnithara. The Moovatupuzha Vigilance Court which submitted the preliminary investigation report stated that Babu had misused his position and accumulated wealth and crores of rupees and had transferred his assets in the name of his benami.

Clean chit for Mani, no proof to prosecute him, says vigilance
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is not enough evidence to arraign former finance minister K M Mani in the bar scam case, said the report submitted by vigilance S P Sukesan at the vigilance court in the capital city. The further probe conducted was not able to find necessary proofs to indict Mani.
The report has also stated that as there is no enough evidences, further steps against Mani should be cancelled. Statements justifying that he had accepted a bribe of Rs one crore has not been obtained in the investigation. There is no proof for Mani accepting bribe nor asking for it. Not only that, there is inconsistency in the statements and phone dialogues. Some corrections have been made in the disc produced by bar hotel association working president Biju Ramesh and so it need not be examined, said the vigilance.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The vigilance Sunday dismissed the allegation that former industries minister Elamaram Kareem took a bribe of Rs 5 crore for giving approval for mining at Chakkittapara in Kozhikode during the previous LDF tenure.
Vigilance director Winson M Paul accepted the report produced by vigilance SP R Sukesan citing no evidence for registering case against Kareem. The allegation against Kareem is politically motivated. No material evidence on the allegation has been obtained. The report says the special investigating team were not able to trace the company representatives who gave the bribe.
Kareem the then industries minister gave permission for mining in May 2009. Kareem’s relative P P Noushad’s former driver Subair had alleged that the former accepted a bribe of Rs 5 crore for it. Following the allegation, the UDF Government ordered a vigilance probe. Soon behind, the UDF Government cancelled the permission for mining.

Corruption in Cashew Corpn: Register case, says vigilance
KOLLAM: The vigilance has prepared a report recommending a detailed probe after registering a case on the corruption in the Cashew Development Corporation. The Kollam vigilance unit will hand over the quick verification report to the director this week.
Corruption has taken place in the contract given to procure cashew. The report says the managing director who signed the contract should be included as an accused. Cashew was procured after paying more than the price of the market price. The corporation procured cashew for Rs 117 when it was between Rs 100 to Rs 107 in the market. The corporation incurred a loss through it. The probe has noticed that the procured cashew was not of international standard. A detailed probe is needed on it.
The government granted 30 crore for the Cashew Corporation. Out of the amount, 13 core was earmarked for procuring cashew. The report said the irresponsible attitude of the corporation incurred a loss.
The Kerala High Court had earlier ordered a CBI probe on the corruption.

Permission not obtained for prosecuting Thachankary, says vigilance
THRISSUR: The vigilance informed the Thrissur Vigilance Court that permission from the state government has not been obtained to prosecute IG Tomin Thachankary for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.A letter has been sent to the government seeking permission for the prosecution. Vigilance DySP K R Venugopal told the court that as soon as permission is obtained, a charge sheet will be filed. A plea of social activist P D Joseph against the delay in filing charge sheet is under the consideration of the court. The case will be considered again on April 30.
