Two killed, 25 missing in Maharashtra dam burst

RATNAGIRI (MAHARASHTRA): At least two persons were killed and another 25 missing after a small dam burst near Alore-Shirgaon village late on Tuesday, officials said here on Wednesday.

According to police, the Tivare Dam which had started overflowing around 8 pm following heavy rain, reportedly breached soon after.

As the water gushed out in a flood-like situation, at least seven villages downstream were inundated, a dozen homes washed away and around two dozen people have been reported missing.

So far, the police have recovered two bodies from the water and a search is on for the remaining still untraced.

Teams of the fire brigade and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Pune and Sindhudurg, besides volunteers from nearby areas, have launched rescue operations on war footing. Top civic and police officials have rushed to the disaster spot.

The dam was built in 2000 and people in the area claim they had informed the district authorities of its leakage two years back but no repairs were carried out.

Large parts of Maharashtra have been battered with heavy rain in the past five days, and on Tuesday at least 40 people were killed in rain-related incidents across the state.a

Two killed, five hurt as bus rams into hotel

KOCHI: Two people were killed and five injured, three of them seriously, when a city busy ran into a hotel after the driver lost control of the vehicle at Karimugal in the district this morning. The dead were identified as Marisami, an employee of the hotel and Kunjumon, police said.


The seriously injured have been admitted to a private hospital here and the other two at Tripunithura, the sources added. The incident occurred when the bus driver applied brake to avoid hitting a two-wheeler rider.


He lost control and rammed into the hotel, the sources said.

Two killed, 10 injured as bus overturns in Palakkad

Thursday, 19 April 2012:One person was killed and 10 injured when a private bus, in which they were travelling overturned near Kongad on Today early morning , police said.
The deceased has been identified as Renjith . The injured were taken to Palakkad district hospital.

Two killed, 11 hurt in 3 mishaps

The first accident occurred at Velarkudi in the morning, which falls under the Attingal police station limits.
 Rajendran, a daily labourer, was killed when a private bus rammed into his motor cycle near the Girls HSS. The bus was heading for Attingal while Rajendran was coming in the opposite direction. The private bus which lost control turned turtle and eight people were injured.
 In another accident at Paravankunnu, near Manacaud, in the evening, a retired joint secretary of the General Administration Department was killed. The deceased has been identified as Purushothaman of Muttathara. The motor cycle he was riding collided with a city service bus near Paravankunnu killing him on the spot. Three people were injured in another road mishap at Thattathumala near Kilimanoor. A Thiruvananthapuram-bound car bumped into another vehicle while trying to overtake it. The car lost control and collided rammed into another vehicle. Three people, hailing from Thiruvalla, were critically injured in the accident. They were admitted to a private hospital here.

Kilpauk Hospital in Chennai fire in ICU, two killed

Saturday, July 23, 2011: At least two patients were killed when fire broke out in the intensive medical care unit of the government Kilpauk Hospital in Chennai early Saturday.

Police suspect an electrical short circuit in the air-conditioner system in the doctor’s room inside the unit triggered the fire at 5.10 am. Hospital authorities confirmed that two patients — Tamil Selvi, 45 and Krishna Bai, 72 were killed in the mishap.
