KOZHIKODE: Actor Suresh Gopi has said that people should be careful about ‘uncles’ who reach home with drunkards. “The government’s decision to close bars is good but it should not overlook issues which are the offshoots of that decision,” the actor said after inaugurating the Balika mandiram built by Seva Bharati in Kozhikode.
“ As part of the government’s liquor policy, bars in Kerala are being closed one by one. In this circumstance, there will be increased boozing sessions at homes. This will affect the security of girls and women at homes. The home ministry should conduct a survey on how far it would be a threat to the safety of girls at homes, “ the actor said, adding, he isn’t against the government’s liquor policy.
Abdul Wahab is League’s Rajya Sabha candidate
MALAPPURAM: P V Abdul Wahab has been chosen as the Rajya Sabha candidate of the Muslim League. His name was announced by party state chief Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal Saturday morning. Wahab was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2010. He was the chosen as the candidate after pushing behind League general secretary K P A Majeed.
Minister P K Kunhalikutty said the decision was taken after normal procedures. The names of many were heard earlier. The final decision is to field Wahab as the final candidate. There is no dispute in the party in connection with the candidature. All should abide the decision of Panakkad Thangal, Majeed told reporters.

Bar case: No action over VS’ letter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vigilance will not conduct probe on the basis of the letter given by Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan that contained allegations of corruption against three ministers in the bar bribery case. The Vigilance rejected the request, pointing out that the conversation in the CD submitted along with the letter lacked clarity.
In the letter, VS had sought inquiry against Ministers Ramesh Chennithala, V S Shiva Kumar and K Babu. It was Bar Association Working President Biju Ramesh who had first revealed the names of three ministers in the statements given to Magistrate as per Rule 164.
Elephant runs amok, gores owner to death
KOTTAYAM: A 58-year-old man was killed after an elephant ran amok on Wednesday. The dead has been identified as Babu of Poonjar. The incident happened Wednesday morning at 7.35 am at Erattupetta when Keetanparamban, the elephant owned by Babu was brought for carrying logs.
The elephant was in chains for days after showing symptoms of musth. Even after showing symptoms of musth, he used to obey Babu. On that belief, he went near him and unchained the elephant. The enraged elephant gored him to death and later created a tense situation. It was brought under control after firing tranquiliser darts.
Babu was the owner of Pala Timbers. A native of Theekoyi, Babu was staying in Palai. The same elephant had killed three persons earlier. It is also stated that an order was issued against the elephant’s entry in Meenachil taluk. The body of Babu was first taken to Erattupetta CMC Hospital and later to Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

Ten thousands offer pongala at Karikkakom
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ten thousands of women offer pongala at the famous Karikkakom Sree Chamundi Devi Temple here on Wednesday.
Devotees lit the pongala hearths chanting prayers soon after Puliyur Illath Narayanan Anujan Namboothiripad, the temple tantri, lit the pandara aduppu at 10.00 am. After bringing the ceremonial sword of the Devi to the pongala pot, the pongala tharpanam would be performed.
Women from different parts of the district arrived to offer pongala. A flow of devotees was witnessed in the temple from morning. Special bus services of KSRTC was arranged for the women.
