Alappuzha, Tuesday, May 03, 2011: The police have collected more evidence in connection with the explosion at Punjab National bank’s ATM counter near Cherthala on May 2. Four persons who are suspected to have connection with the explosion are now under police observation. Two are natives of Cherthala, and the other two natives of Thanchavoor.
The visuals from the surveillance camera installed in the ATM counter showed that two men had entered the cabin and had tried to withdraw money. The police have collected the details of these persons from the bank authorities.
Meanwhile the police had earlier arrested a native of Vaikom, who had planted the explosives for looting the cash loaded in the ATM machine.
The visuals also showed a man, wearing a blue shirt and white trouser, with his face covered using a red towel, setting off the bomb. The explosion that occurred at 11.45 in the night drew people from nearby homes within minutes. The local residents told that the explosion was heard at a distance of 1 km.
The explosion damaged the glass walls, air-conditioner and interiors of the kiosk, but left the ATM, with only a few scratches. The bank authorities informed that the cash loaded in the machine was safe.
