Friday, July 22, 2011: Kerala has registered a huge growth in urban population over the decade with slightly over 47 per cent of 33.38 crore people living in cities and towns, according to provisional figures of the 2011 census.
While the rural population in the state was enumerated to be 17, 4555,506, the urban population stood at 15,932,171, which shows that the town-village divides, have been considerably bridged since 2001. People living in rural areas fell from 74.04 per cent in 2001 to 52.30 per cent in 2011.
The huge growth of urban population of 92 per cent in 10 years could be attributed to manifold increase in the number of towns from 159 to 520 during the period. Ernakulam district, with the state’s fast-growing business hub Kochi as headquarters, is the most urbanised area in the state.
The upland Wayand in north Kerala, on the other hand, is the least urbanised district. Women continue to outnumber men in Kerala with an overall sex ratio of 1084 females per 1000 males.
