THIRUVANANHAPURAM: Dr Oommen V Oommen-headed panel, instituted by the government to study the Kasturirangan report on conservation of Western Ghats, has submitted its report to the State government. The panel has recommended for the amendment of norms regarding Ecological sensitivity.
The panel has also recommended exclusion of small-scale farmers with up to five acres of land from Ecologically Fragile Land (EFL). No new land should be acquired under EFL. Special study should be conducted to classify human habitat, gardens, forest. The panel opined that there is no need for buffer zone in Kerala and vigilance inquiry should be conducted into unauthorised quarries along the Western Ghats.
Chief Minster Ooommen Chady, while accepting the report on Friday, said that the government is not against the conservation of environment. Today itself the report would be published on the website. He said nothing would be done to inconvenience farmers and all grievances regarding the Kasturirangan reports would be discussed with the prime minister during his Kerala visit
