Cabinet nod for Kochi waterway project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has given the sanction for Kochi waterway project that envisages a better, faster and modern public transport in the city, making use of safe water ways. At a press conference on Tuesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the project will be submitted to the Central government for getting the financial help of German development assistance bank, KfW.

The project plan was prepared by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd that shows an estimate of Rs 682.01 crore. The estimate doesn’t include the expense for acquiring the land. State government’s share in the project is Rs 102.30 crore.

The project aims at providing easy transport facility for people from lake side’s towards the mainland and thus improving their standard of life.

The project, which is expected to be completed within four years, will develop 76 km water ways that include modern and secure boat jetties. It is also expected that the project would cater to the water transport needs of about three lakh people.
The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is bringing out the project as it is presumed that the Metro rail would not suffice the complete travel needs of the Kochi people.

The cabinet has also decided to revive administrative sanction for building 11.2 km long metro line that stretches from Kalur Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad at an expense of Rs 2024 crore. The project will be submitted to the Centre after fixing its share at 20 per cent.
