THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A protest broke out when Irrigation Minister K Krishnankutty visited Valiyathura. The residents protested over the delay in constructing sea walls. A fight broke out between the police and the residents of the area. Minister Krishnankutty reached Valiyathura at 12 noon to examine the damage caused by high waves.
The residents came to the fore staging protests. The protesters demanded a permanent means of escape from sea erosion. Though the minister informed to solve it after holding discussions, they wanted him to find a solution today itself. It was at this time a scuffle broke out between the police and the protesters.
A large number of police personnel deployed in the area brought the situation under control. Later the minister left the place without visiting damaged houses in the coastal areas as the police denied permission citing more protests from the fisherfolk.
Blocking the minister there led to a clash. The police had a tough time in bringing the minister to the car. There was a move to block his car also.
The residents of the coastal areas are facing severe sea ravages after the start of the monsoon season. Nearly 15 houses have been completely damaged and almost 100 houses have been partially damaged. Following that, the residents have been shifted to three relief camps.
