THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Some government offices of the state functioned on Sunday as a mark of respect to late president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.
Chief Secretary Jiji Thompson had on July 28 tweeted that all state government offices would remain open on Sunday but the idea was shot down by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
The directorate of health services, however, worked on Sunday. The decision was taken by the staff welfare committee.
"Not only is our office working today (Sunday), but we have begun an anti-malaria drive too," its director S Jayashankar told the media.
"It was a unanimous decision taken by all of us to work on Sunday as this was what our former president Kalam wanted," said a staff member.
Kalam, who died in Shillong last week, had earlier mentioned in his post that instead of taking a holiday after his death, everyone should work an extra day.
Many officials of the state government had expressed a desire to work on a holiday and it was this which spurred Thompson to tweet.
Reports from other districts also said that some government offices like the village panchayats were open.
Kalam, who worked as a scientist in the ISRO here, lived in the capital city for close to two decades, starting from the late 60s to the early 80s -- and was a hugely popular figure.
Special police station for safety of Mullaperiyar
NEW DELHI: The Kerala Government has informed the Supreme Court that a special police station would be established for the safety of the Mullapieriyar dam. There would be 124 members in the special force led by a DySP.
The state has informed the court that they will no compromise over the safety of the dam. The affidavit of the state has claimed that Tamil Nadu’s stand on the dam is not of good intention and are politicising the IB report that there is a threat on the dam.

Office of AG comes under attack again
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has come forward harshly criticising the office of the advocate general. The government is not interested in conducting the case, criticized Justice Alexander Thomas. He directed the chief secretary to submit a report after examining the mismanagement of the office of the AG in four cases. The report should be prepared within two weeks and submitted before the registrar.
Criminal mismanagement is usually seen in the conduct of the case. The office of the AG failed to submit it even after asked many times. In some cases, the office has special interest and in some government advocates give wrong details, blamed the justice.

Murder of Chandrabose: HC upholds slapping KAAPA against Nisham
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court Thursday upheld slapping Kerala Antisocial Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) against Muhammed Nisham, sensational industrialist and an accused in Chandrabose murder case. The court upheld after rejecting Nisham’s plea questioning slapping of KAAPA. The court dismissed the arguments that the act was slapped against him following external pressure and without enough reasons.
KAAPA was framed against him on March 10. It was slapped on him after finding him accused in many cases including locking a woman cop in car.
Nisham attacked Chandrabose, the security guard of Thrissur Shoba City on January 29 in 2015. He died while undergoing treatment on February 16.

No power tariff or surcharge hike in state
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress-led UDF government Thursday said it would not hike power tariff and surcharge during its remaining tenure.
Replying to a notice for an adjournment motion moved by the CPI (M) led LDF opposition on the power situation in the state, Power Minister Aryadan Muhammed said government would not hike tariff and surcharge rates.
Giving details of power situation, he said state used to purchase 700 to 800 MW of power from outside annually to meet the shortage.
As part of its programme to conserve power, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) would distribute two LED bulbs free of cost to all Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families, he said adding KSEB had also earmarked about Rs 350 crore to provide subsidy to consumers who use power below 125 units per month.
CPI (M) deputy leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan brought to the notice of the house KSEB's move to hike power tariff and demanded that government desist from that attempt.

Consumerfed’s outlets for Onam
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In reply to the calling attention of M Hamsa, Minister C N Balakrishnan said 3000 outlets of Consumerfed will be opened during the Onam season. The government has given 25 crore for it. Items of 13 kinds will be sold at a discount of 20%. Steps will be taken to solve the problems faced by cooperative societies.
The government will approach finance department to obtain relaxation on sales tax for cooperative societies. Some societies are not paying share on risk fund project. 124.34 crore has been sanctioned from risk fund for 18728 applications. One and a half lakh would be obtained as insurance. Steps will be taken to utilize the amount for the members’ welfare. Audit facility will be computerized. A software would be launched jointly with CDit.
