‘Chit fund agent’ cheats people of Rs 3 crore

KOCHI: Beware of women agents promising high price for gold by joining a chit fund. Recently, the police received complaints against a woman who lured people into joining such chit funds and escaped with gold and diamond jewellery worth about Rs 3 crore.
The Palarivattom police who are investigating the case said that a woman named Mayusha Praveen has been visiting city homes and cajoling people into joining her chit fund company. “She has cheated around 50 people. Some of the people who fell into the trap are yet to receive the money for their gold ornaments. The accused got a loan by depositing the gold in a bank. The investigations reveal that she would have gathered around Rs 3 crore for the gold deposited. The woman and her husband applied for an anticipatory bail and are absconding,” a police official said.
According to the senior police officials, there are several fake agents operating in the state who siphon off money from the people.
“Women become easy target of these fake chit agents. Fake women agents trick other women by making false promises of doubling the money within one month. Several cases of fraudsters tricking women belonging to Self Help Groups have surfaced, in the rural areas. People need to be cautious before joining such chit funds and should always check if the company is registered,” a police official said.
