Mulanthuruthy case: Double ife term to accused


KOCHI: Ernakulam Additional Sessions court on Saturday awarded double life imprisonment to the accused in the Mulanthuruthy double murder case.
The accused, Sam Varghese, 41, of Kuparayil House, Chennithala, had murdered his wife Kunjumol, father-in-law P T Joseph alias Kochouseph and attempted to murder his mother-in-law Kunhamma.
The court sentenced Sam Varghese to life term and a fine of `50,000 for the murders while the second life imprisonment was handed for attempting to murder his mother-in-law. The court also levied an additional fine of `20,000 for this offence.If the accused fails to remit the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one-year imprisonment, the court added.
The accused had killed his wife by hanging before murdering his father-in-law. He also tried to kill Kunhamma, who witnessed the first murder, by pushing her into a well. The murders were reportedly committed over family issues. Prosecutor T P Ramesh submitted that the accused was entitled to get maximum punishment for committing such a heinous crime.
The investigation of the case was completed by Circle Inspector Biju K Stephan and M B Chandrakshan Nair. Sessions Judge P K Laksmanan had examined 39 witnesses and 29 pieces of evidence were produced before the court.
