MUMBAI: Once news got around that the Agni Air Dornier aircraft had crashed at the high-altitude Jomsom airport in Nepal, a frantic Harish Sachdev was on the phone seeking updates from the Indian embassy in Nepal.
Sachdev’s wife Geeta and 14-year-old daughter and child artiste Taruni were travelling in the ill-fated flight. Taruni has featured in at least 50 ads and did a cameo in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Paa’. She also, played pivotal roles in two Malayam Movies Vellinakshatram and Sathyam.
Several hours later, when Sachdev learnt that he had lost both wife and child in the crash, there was no time to grieve. He had to book himself the earliest possible flight to Kathmandu.
“The first flight to Kathmandu from Mumbai was on Tuesday morning,” said Ajay Jain, a family friend of the Sachdevs. Of the 13 Indians, who died in Monday's crash, seven were from Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Yashpal Mehra a resident of Tardeo in south Mumbai was getting ready to fly to Kathmandu to claim the bodies of his sister Menaka, 50, brother-in-law Kamal, 53, and nephew Shiv, 19. Mehra too was supposed to go on the Kathmandu trip with them, but had to back out at the last moment because of work commitments. Mehra, who spoke to his sister minutes before the plane took off, “She was raving about the breathtaking locales and how they were missing me.”

There is a young, handsome (I suspect), super skillful man, a charismatic guru. There is a young, pretty woman, a bit retarded and limited in her interests, often career-oriented. Monsters comes, people die, only a handsome superhero can save a day. A girl changes her shoes and/or shirt and becomes a superwoman in about 30 seconds, instantly gets expertise in gymnastics, combat, weapons handling, strategy and kills monsters together with a handsome guru (although the monsters had no problem with killing 1000 heavily armed troopers. Or maybe it is all that eating that made monsters slower?).
