Trawling ban in Kerala from June 15
Wednesday, May 16, 2012: The 45-day ban on trawling by mechanized fishing boats during monsoon in Kerala would come into force from June 15. The ban will be in force within 12 nautical miles (22.22 km) from the shoreline till July 31.
District collectors would hold meetings of all stakeholders in the fish sector to discuss modalities for enforcing the ban. Trawling is banned the state in view of the gestation period of different species of fishes during monsoon.
The fish is expected to become costlier once the trawlers stop venturing out into the sea.
This ban aims at conserving fish species during the monsoon, which is the spawning season for many varieties of fish, including shrimp. During the ban period all those working in mechanized boats, peeling sheds and fishing harbours in the state are provided with free ration.
