The ceremonial ‘kodiyettam’ (flag hoisting) was held in various participating temples in the town on Friday. Besides the flag hoisting, rituals like ‘bhoomi pooja’, ‘Poorapurappadu’ and special poojas were also performed at various temples.
The ‘pooram’ will culminate on May 12 with processions and parades from various temples converging at the Thekkinkad maidan in front of the Vadakkumnathan temple in the heart of the city.
The Thiruvanbadi Devaswom and the Paramekkavu Devaswom are the major temples which compete in elephant parade and fireworks. The first round of the display of fireworks, known as ’sample vedikkettu’ in local parlance, will be held on May 10 and 11 respectively, temple management said.
Thrissur Pooram a stimulating fusion of splendor and pageantry. Known as the pooram of all poorams (a pooram means a star/confluence of all arts), this one is a cultural climax of excellence, which is held annually in Aril/May in the Thrissur town. This 200-years old festival features dramatic parade of caparisoned elephants as well as enticing percussion shows in seeming to be endless succession of 36 hours marathon of unbelievable magnificence. Lasting for 1.5 days (6 am to 12 noon the other day), Thrissur Pooram is the feast for the five senses, which is celebrated in the traditional Indian way. Unlike the other temple festivals, this one welcomes people of all religions and castes.
