Sunday, July 24, 2011: State government would soon formulate a policy to check sex rackets and award stringent punishment for those involved in such cases, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said.
The Chief Minister said the policy would be on the lines of the one adopted by the Andhra Pradesh government.
He was speaking after a 30-minute interaction with social activist Sunita Krishnan, who heads `Prajwala” group which is active in Andhra Pradesh. The NGO has plans to extend its activities to Kerala.
Chandy sought the NGO’’s help to prepare a report on unwed mothers in Wayanad district and exploitation of minor girls who fell prey to sex rackets in different parts of the state. Sunita Krishnan said 30 lakh women had fallen prey to sex rackets in the country, of which 88 per cent were below 14 years of age.
Kerala has been rocked by sex scams involving minors of late, the first of which was of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by 100-odd persons over a period of time and another in which a girl of the same age was allegedly sexually abused for over a year in various places by many persons, including her father.
