AIYF Secretariat march turns violent

Tuesday, March 20, 2012: The Secretariat march taken out by the activists of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) as a protest against the government move to raise the retirement age to 56, turned violent.
A tense situation prevailed for nearly two hours in the city as the protesters and police clashed in front of the secretariat. Police lathicharged and used water cannons when the march turned violent.
The Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala on Monday raised the retirement age of state government employees to 56 years from the existing 55. Finance Minister KM Mani made the announcement in this regard while presenting the state Budget for the current fiscal.
