Five held on charge of theft

KOTTAYAM: Five teenagers, including two minors, were arrested by the Kottayam (West) police on Wednesday for allegedly being involved in nearly 50 cases of theft. The arrested have been identified as Faizal (18) of Kaithamalathazhe house in Athirampuzha, Jithin (19) of Padinjathu house in Thellakom, Mahesh (18) of Lakshamveedu Colony in Perumbaikkad, and two youths aged. The gang was nabbed in connection with stealing a motorcycle, cash and electronic items. Upon interrogation, the teenagers confessed to having been involved in thefts that took place in Gandhinagar, Kozhikode and Muvattupuzha police station limits over the past three years.

Many of their thefts were found to be centered on residential areas of migrant labourers and construction sites. The gang usually sold all the stolen articles to a trader who operated from Gandhinagar near Ettumanoor. The teenagers were arrested during their attempt to meet the trader at Thirunakkara late on Tuesday. A laptop and a portable DVD player were also confiscated from the accused, who confessed to having stolen the items from a dwelling of migrant labourers at Chemmanampady in Gandhinagar. The gang was nabbed by a team led by Kottayam DySP V. Ajith and Kottayam (West) Circle Inspector Zacharia Mathew.
