'Monsoon likely to hit Kerala on June 1'
NEW DELHI: Union meteorological department has informed that the South-West monsoon may visit Kerala on June 1. But, this time the monsoon’s intensity will be below average. The met officials attribute possible drop in the amount of rains to a phenomenon called El Nino. Less rains will have undesired impact on agriculture sector, said the officials.
As per the existing circumstances, there is no chance for delay in the monsoon. Even if any delay happens, it will be just for two or three days.
Sufficient rain is required for Kharif crops such as paddy. Union Agriculture Ministry is preparing an insurance scheme by roping in 580 districts, in order to give certain packages to farmers
Compared with the last year, Kerala got 12 per cent less rain this time. This had badly affected the production of cotton and grains.
However, unexpected heavy rains that occurred in March-April months had damaged crops to a large extent, leading to farmer suicides.

LNG scheme a big loss: Petronet CEO
KOCHI: Petronet CEO A K Balyan has said that the Kochi LNG scheme was running at a loss of Rs 400 crore. “The scheme has been facing a great challenge in acquiring land and laying pipelines. To implement the scheme, the government should show more interest and will power,” he said at a press conference.
He opined that Kerala’s political leaders should forget politics when it comes to development. “The scheme which kicked off simultaneously in Gujarat has already started functioning. But in Kerala, even the pipelines were not able to be laid. This is a total neglect. Though the government has been repeatedly saying that the project will be implemented, no follow-up is there. If the government shows sincerity, the scheme can be implemented within seven months. People is anxious about the project and it is the responsibility of the government to find a solution to it…,” Balyan said.

Cong will not succumb to unwarranted pressure from UDF allies: Sudheeran
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC president V M Sudheeran has said that as a party that heads the UDF, it will solve all reasonable complaints of the allies but will not succumb to their unwarranted pressure tactics. “There is no differentiation between big parties and small parties. Congress has not shown big brother attitude towards any party,” said Sudheeran at a press conference here on Saturday.
He said UDF’s regional rallies would not be postponed at any cost. “The decision on rallies was taken unitedly by UDF leaders after discussions. It is part of UDF’s political campaign. It will go on as decided previously and changing the decision will send a wrong message. I don’t think any ally will skip the rally,” he was responding to Finance Minister K M Mani’s opinion that rallies need to be held only after bar bribery probe is over.
He said UDF subcommittee had submitted reports regarding the Palakkad defeat to the chief minister and it was yet to reach the KPCC. “KPCC didn’t probe the issue as the UDF had appointed a subcommittee to do the job. Further action will be taken after the report reaches the KPCC.”
Regarding the bar bribery case, he said the probe was heading in the right direction. “If solid and convincing evidence is received, it will be treated seriously. Probe is going on against persons, irrespective of the positions they hold. I don’t think even the Opposition has any complaint about the probe,” he added.
