Congress appeasement policy dangerous: MA Baby

KOLLAM: CPM politburo member M A Baby said that the dangerous policy shift by the Congress in its attempt to retain  power by appeasing caste and religious groups, will disturb the secular democratic atmosphere prevailing in the state.
Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Kollam Press Club on Tuesday, he said that such moves in the long run will make a state a nurturing ground for communalism and terrorism.
"The Congress which had been earlier showed some restraint in playing the communal card, due to the bold stand taken by some of leaders like A K Antony, has now stooped to a dangerous level. Even portfolios are being traded even among Congress ministers with the various community tags,” he said.
Baby said that the CPM is not attempting to take advantage of the crisis that has arisen in the UDF. The CPM expects the Congress to correct it policies, he said.
The Left movement on the other hand is gaining strength, through the joint movement of the working class against the governments at the Centre and the state.
Asked whether the CPM had granted permission to Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan to visit the Koodankulam nuclear plant site, Baby evaded a direct reply, but added that the party congress held at Kozhikode had taken a stand not to oppose the functioning of the plant, as the construction of the plant had begun in the 1980s with Russian collaboration.
