THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After motorised tri-scooters, the District Panchayat is all set to launch a mobile dialysis unit taking its efforts in the health care sector to a new level. The mobile dialysis unit would be launched by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on the Secretariat premises on Wednesday morning.
On Monday, the mobile unit was taken to Medical College, where its condition was checked by doctors and approved for use. The mobile unit was bought under a health project of the District Panchayat, spending nearly ` 55 lakh. The project is being undertaken with the help of Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust, Thonnackal, who will meet the recurring expenses of the project. The NGO will also provide a doctor for the unit and also a technician.
"It is extending our palliative care efforts to a new direction. There are many poor people who have no money to go for continuous dialysis and are given no chance to live. This is an effort to provide the service free of cost to BPL patients in the panchayat area,’’ said Rufus Daniel, vice-president of the District Panchayat.
The unit will cover 26 divisions and 73 grama panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram. A mobile number to contact the service would be launched on Wednesday which could be called up and the facility used without any payment. The unit will cover all places on a periodic basis.
"We are also planning to open a dialysis unit at Neyyattinkara Taluk Hospital soon. Renal failure has been claiming many lives and there have been no interventions to give them a reprieve,’’ said Rufus Daniel.
