Susan Nathan deported to Tel Aviv

KOZHIKODE: Israeli writer Susan Nathan has been deported to Tel Aviv, capital of Israel. The district administration deported her on Wednesday following an order of the High Court of Kerala. The Nadakkavu police, who registered a case against her for overstaying in the country, transferred her to Mumbai. She would be flown to Tel Aviv via Oman on Thursday morning, G Sparjankumar, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, said. The Nadakkavu police on Wednesday took Nathan into custody from her rented apartment near West Hill in the city at 9 am. She was taken to Calicut Airport and deported on a flight to Mumbai at 1.50 pm. Reliable sources said the district administration had sanctioned Rs 38,500 from the miscellaneous fund of the District Collector for meeting the expenses of executing the deportation order.


Last week the 63-year-old UK born Jewish writer had moved a petition before the Supreme Court through her counsel Manjeri Sunder Raj to dismiss the deportation order of the High Court of Kerala. The police said Nathan had been staying here on Entry
(X)-visa which had expired on February 21. She had been residing in the country before coming to Kozhikode on October 14, 2009. The district administration had submitted a detailed report to the Home Department, seeking sanction of funds for meeting the deportation expenses of Nathan to Israel. Earlier, the State government had informed the High Court of Kerala that Nathan had close connections with Islamic extremist groups, including the proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India.


She had also been penning articles in Thejas , organ of National Development Front, the police said. The High Court of Kerala issued the deportation order on March 16. The Nadakkavu Police had registered a case against Nathan on February 27 under various sections of the Foreigners' Act. She had appealed against the order before the Divisional Bench of the High Court of Kerala. She had also moved a petition before the Kozhikode Judicial First Class Magistrate. Nathan had won fame with her book ‘Other Side of Israel', highlighting the plight of residents in various Arab camps in Israel.
