“Adaminte Makan Abu” out of Oscar race

Thursday, January 19, 2012: Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu, India’s official entry to the upcoming Academy Awards, has failed to make it to the top nine shortlist for the Best Foreign Film for 2011.
The National Award-winning film, directed by Salim Ahmed, is a family drama about an elderly Muslim couple and their struggle to go on a Haj. The movie was among 63 entries screened by the Oscar committee in the first phase.
The film failed to make it to the top nine shortlist for the best foreign film Oscar for 2011. The nine films shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the foreign language category are Bullhead (Belgium), Monsieur Lazhar (Canada), Superclásico (Denmark), Pina (Germany), A Separation (Iran), Footnote (Israel), Omar Killed Me (Morocco), In Darkness (Poland) and Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (Taiwan).
India’s only remaining hope at this year’s Academy Awards is now Sohan Roy’s DAM 999. The final Oscar awards presentation ceremony will take place on February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
