Police refute charge of plan to hack e-mails of Muslim leaders

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala police Tuesday rubbished a media report that its intelligence wing had drawn up a list of prominent Muslim leaders and cultural personalities for hacking their personal e-mails.

A probe into the report in a prominent Malayalam daily found that the list cited by it was part of information collected from a person facing investigation, state DGP Jacob Punnose said here.

"The IDs were gathered from a person under investigation. This list included e-mail IDs of persons from different communities. There was no attempt to hack the personal mail of anybody or collect their pass words or log in details", Punnose said in a release.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had Monday instructed ADGP (Intelligence), Sen Kumar, to investigate the allegation. "It is unfortunate that such a report which could cause communal ill-will had appeared. There has been no attempt from the part of the police to discriminate between communities," Punnose said.

A Malayalam daily had reported Monday that the SB-CID, the intelligence wing of the state police, had drawn up a list of 258 persons from the community for hacking, which included leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League, the second largest partner in the ruling Congress-led UDF. The report claimed that the police had sought to obtain from service providers the password and log-in details of the persons in the list.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition V S Achuthanandan condemned the alleged plan of state police to hack personal e-mails of some prominent leaders, cultural personalities and mediapersons belonging to Muslim community. He termed it a "fascist" move and "naked aggression" on the privacy and freedom of individuals and asked the Chief Minister to come clean on the issue.
