Four labourers killed, 10 hurt as jeep falls into gorge



IDUKKI: Four women labourers, including a 19-year-old girl, were killed and 10 injured, three of them seriously, when the jeep in which they were travelling fell into a 10-foot-deep gorge at B L Ram Vilakku, near Santhanpara in the district today.


The dead were identified as Iruthayya Mary (46), her daughter Stella (28), Rajathi (50) and Sheela (19), all hailing from Bhodi Vinobabava Colony in Tamil Nadu and worked as estate labourers. The three seriously injured women have been admitted to the Theni Medical College Hospital and others in nearby hospitals, the sources said.


The tragedy occured when the jeep carrying 13 labourers, including one male to the estate, lost control after hitting the parapet wall and fell into the gorge, killing three on the spot and the other in the hospital.
