Government urged to take over Nelliampathy estates


Activists of various social, environmental and human rights organisations staged a satyagraha in front of the civil station here on Monday demanding the Government to take over Nelliampathy estates.


  “The lease period allotted for many of the estate owners have expired and the government should take over the land from them,” the agitators said.  


The other demands included the constitution of a special team headed by the DGP to investigate into the pledging of forest land and availing of loans from the banks, transfer of estates and forging of documents.


 Kerala Forest Research Institute scientist Dr S Shankar inaugurated the satyagraha. Former MLA V C Kabir presided over the function. Among those who were present included Indianur Gopi of the Bharathapuzha Samrakshana Samiti, P S Panicker of the Jana Jagratha, Velayodi Venugopal of the Plaachimada Samara Samiti, S Bhaskaran of the Malampuzha Dam Samrakshana Samiti, K Jayakumar of the Kerala Forest Protective Staff Association, M N Anwarudheen of the Palakkad Munottu, Regina of the Janakeeya Prathirodha Samiti, S Guruvayurappan of the Wild Life Protection Society of India, Armughan Pathichira of the Haritha Development Association, Mani Kulangara of the Prakruthi Samrakshana Sangham and K A Ramakrishnan of the Desiya Karshaka Samajam.
