One dead, four missing in Kothamangalam landslips


KOCHI/KOTTAYAM: One person was killed and four are reported missing in the landslip that occurred in Kothamangalam. The person dead has been identified as Narayanan of Kadavoor. One person with injuries has been admitted to the hospital.

Nine houses have been washed away in the landslip that occurred at Kadavoor  in Paigottoor at 4.15 pm. The fire force and police have started search operations for the missing.  

The landslip occurred soon after heavy rains lashed the area. Heavy rains are still continuing in the places. People have been evacuated from the area after a warning has been issued that landslips may recur.

A landslide occurred at Thalanad near Erattupetta in Kottayam this morning following incessant rains.  The region was experiencing incessant rains since last night. Heavy rains accompanied by landslides wreaked havoc in parts of Erattupetta.  Landslides threw life out of gear in the area. Road traffic was affected and rubber crops were destroyed due to the landslide. Traffic on Thalanad-Theekoy Road was affected due to the deposit of debris.

Heavy rains lashed the state on Chingam 1, an auspicious day for the Keralites. The government as well as the people is pinning hope that heavy rains may bring a solution to the problems of drinking water and electricity  haunting the state.

Heavy rains were expected in Karkadakam. Monsoon showers are expected to strengthen in the coming days.
