Violence breaks out following arrest of Jayarajan

KANNUR: Tension prevailed in Kannur town following the arrest of CPI (M) District Secretary and the party's state Committee member P Jayarajan in connection with the murder of IUML youth activist Abdul Shukkoor. Following the outbreak of violence in the town, police burst tear gas to disburse protestors as CPM and DYFI activists attacked Police vehicles and assaulted a news photographer in front of the Collectorate office here. It was also reported that the violence appeared to be spreading to neighbouring areas also.

Meanwhile, the police clamped prohibitory orders for today and tomorrow in Kannur town in view of the violence spreading in connection with the arrest. The party alleged that the arrest was politically motivated with the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government hatching a conspiracy to defame the CPI (M).

The party also announced a protest march to Kannur SP Office in connection with the arrest.
