MALAPPURAM: 14 persons including the driver and seven students were killed when a private bus overturned near Perinthalmanna. The condition of the 25 injured is stated to be critical.
The accident happened when the mini bus ‘Friends’ overturned after hitting a tree when trying to overtake at Thelakkadam while proceeding to Alanalloor from Perinthalmanna. The passengers were mostly students who were going home after exams. The bodies of some are still stranded under the bus.
The bodies of Mariya (50) of Melkkulangara, Fazeela and Cheriyakkan have been identified. The bodies of four have been kept at Al Shifa Hospital and the rest at the Moulana Hospital.
It is suspected that over speed of the bus is the reason for the accident. Mini buses are being transported in narrow roads here.
Chief Minister and other ministers have left for Perinthalmanna. Minister Aryadan Muhammed said the bus was overcrowded and over speeded.
