Denying school admission to physically challenged: Alleged attempt to trap mother who complained against school

KOZHIKODE: There was an alleged attempt from the part of the police on Saturday to trap the parent who went to complaint against the school that had reportedly denied admission to her physically challenged child.
In response to an earlier complaint given by the school authorities accusing the mother of attempting to malign the reputation of the school, the police summoned her and the child and made them wait at the police station for about 2 hours, though it was Ramzan fasting hours.
Later when the protest against their ‘unwarranted detention’ intensified and media approached the parents and police station, the mother and child were allowed to go after they were told that policemen would go to their house later to record the statement .
The child inflicted by Thalassemia was denied admission by Kozhikode St Joseph Boys High School. As per the government order 5% seats should be set apart for the differently abled.
Despite producing doctor’s certificate that the child has more than 40 % debility and the Commission for differently abled sending the recommendation, the admission was denied to the child. Moreover the school authorities also lodged the complaint against the parents.
The principal of the school said that the parents had failed to produce the doctor’s certificate and the mother tried to demean the school through social media. But, the mother said she didn’t know how to use social media.

Meanwhile, the Child Rights Commission has said that the school’s stand was unlawful and a case should be filed against it.
