NEW DELHI: Ask people of Kerala, ‘Who is the most popular political leader in Kerala?’ They would not think twice to articulate the two letters ‘VS’ as its answer. To them, VS is the crowd. VS is the symbol of untiring presence in the battlefield of Kerala politics. It is none other than V.S. Achuthanandan, the present Opposition Leader of Kerala and one of the founding members of CPI (M).
Achuthanandan, who had been the chief minister of Kerala, may not be well-known outside the state. But, his mass popularity within God’s Own Country has landed him in the blog of the world famous Colombia University. (http://baraza.cdrs.columbia.edu/5qacchu/)
The university has published an interview with VS, concentrating on the current social atmosphere of Kerala and the influence of the leader on it. The interview is done by preeminent Economist, Prof. Prabhat Patnaik.
Achuthanandan is described, in the blog, as one of world’s greatest political leaders and the most popular political leader in India. It says “it is difficult to think of any living Communist leader, other than Fidel Castro of course, who enjoys such massive popularity, cutting across party lines.”
