KOCHI: The government Wednesday informed the Kerala High Court that permission for the proposed airport in Aranmula has been cancelled. The government has also stated that the order announcing the area for the airport as industrial sector has also been annulled.
A full permission was not given for the project. Nod was given only in principle and the government had cancelled it now. They informed the court that the permission is being cancelled following stiff protests from the public.
Permission was given during the tenure of the previous UDF Government. Following that, the project promoters KGS Group approached the union forests and environment ministry and produced a plea for a study on the environment. Though environmental clearance was obtained, the national green tribunal cancelled the permission pointing that Enviro Care who conducted an impact study has not sufficient eligibility. The Supreme Court too upheld it.
The KGS Group had spent more than 420 crore for the project estimated at Rs 2000 crore. They have so far acquired 500 acres for the project.
