THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lakhs of SSLC certificates are being made into piles and burnt to ashes in Pareeksha Bhavan at Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram after a hush-hush decision. This has brought to light utter carelessness from the part of government officials who were engaged for getting the certificates printed.
The government will have to bear losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees due to this process, seen as an attempt to hush up the bureaucratic negligence.
In the SSLC certificate issued last time, serious flaws were spotted in the prints. Though the official version is that about one lakh certificates had flawed printing, some Pareekshabhavan staff say that this number may rise to about to 2.5 lakh.
In 2018, 5.5 lakh students had written the SSLC exam. The cost for printing a certificate is Rs 4.5. The flaw came to the notice of the staff only after the certificates were distributed.
Most flaws were found in certificates issued in Northern districts. The certificates are printed in the special press of Pareekshabhavan while the card for printing is bought from Security press.
The complaint was that printed letters started disappearing partially or fully as the ink came off the cards on which certificates were printed. Thus even names and addresses of students got blotted out from many certificates.
It is said that the use of low-quality toner for printing was the reason for the damage. And interestingly, there is no arrangement in Pareeshabhavan to check the quality of toners used. The employees involved were also not alert as they reportedly kept quiet even after they doubted the quality of printing at the initial stage.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that the tender for supplying toners was taken from a blacklisted company. And, the government is yet to order a probe into this messy deal that has inflicted a big loss to the government exchequer.
