Youth under observation in MCH on suspicion of Nipah virus

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A youth is under observation at the medical college hospital in the capital city on suspicion of Nipah virus. The youth who came from Kochi was admitted in the hospital following fever. His blood samples have been sent to the virology lab in Alappuzha. Only after getting the report from the lab, more treatment will begin, informed the hospital authorities.

Meantime, Union Health Minister Harsha Vardhan said the situation is under control and there is no need to panic. Preventive measures are being evaluated on a daily basis. In the meantime, a high level meet will be convened in the state to assess preventive measures. Chief Minister, Health Minister and officials of the health department will take part in the meet in Kochi today.

The blood samples of the five admitted at the isolation ward in Kalamassery Medical College are sent to the Virology Institute in Pune. The result is likely to be obtained today. The health department has indicated that the primary conclusion is that the test will not result in any anxiety. The blood samples of the two nurses who treated the patient confirmed with the virus and his friends have sent for examination. Presently 314 are under observation.
