State will supply generic medicines free

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state will supply generic medicines free-of-cost to all, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced. The medicines will be made available in all medical colleges in the state and General hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode.

The distribution of generic medicines was intended to save the common man from rising prices of medicines and would cover 952 types of medicines supplied through Government hospitals, he said. Twelve types of medicines would be distributed free of cost through primary healthcare centres for treating lifestyle diseases like diabetes and cholesterol, he added. The Chief Minister had inaugurated the first phase of this project at the Government General Hospital here yesterday.
