NEW DELHI: Following strong resentment from Tamil Nadu, Union Forest and Environment ministry has suspended the permission given by it for environment impact study over the building of dam across Siruvani River in Attapady.
The ministry will take a relook at the decision only after Tamil Nadu and Kerala reach a consensus on the issue. Meanwhile, Kerala may move the Supreme Court against the Centre’s stand.
The Tamil Nadu had passed a resolution in its assembly opposing the Kerala government’s decision to construct the dam.
Tamil Nadu had argued that with the coming up of dam, the quantity of water reaching Bhavani river and Bhavani Sagar dam will decrease. This has also affected the agriculture in Erode and Coimbatore. A letter pointing out the above facts has also been sent to the prime minister.
Kerala had decided to build the dam to ensure the availability of water for 5000 acre farm land at Attapady.
