Lightning raids in schools: Vigilance seizes lakhs of rupees

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the lightning raids held in State schools, following complaints that big money was being collected from students during their admission to schools, the Vigilance department has seized lakhs of unaccounted money from a number of schools.

The Vigilance on Tuesday conducted raids in as many as 45 aided schools and 15 public education department offices.

State-wide anomalies were spotted in the raids. The Vigilance seized money from parents who were carrying lakhs of money in their hand.
Unaccounted money was seized from various management schools in Alappuzha. The Vigilance informed that the money was collected from students.

“In certain schools, Rs 1000, besides the PTA fund donation, was collected from each student and the money collected for PTA was kept in schools, instead of depositing them in banks,” the Vigilance informed.

The illegal practice of management schools with high pass percentage taking huge money from parents for granting admission to their children, anomaly in the recruitment of staff in aided schools and months’ unwarranted delay in filling the vacancies due to retirements are some of the complaints that forced the Vigilance to carry out the raids.
