Govt declares three-day mourning in state


Monday, October 31, 2011: Government has announced a three-day official mourning in the state as mark of respect to Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob, who passed away yesterday night.
Briefing reporters after a special cabinet at Thiruvananthapuram with available Ministers in the capital, also decided to declare a public holiday under instrumental negotiable act on Tuesday.
The Cabinet had also decided to declare a holiday at Ernakulam district tomorrow, as the body of the departed leader would be placed at Town Hall for public homage.

Though the government had a plan to bring the mortal remains of Jacob to the capital city for public homage, as per the wish of his family members, the decision was abandoned by the cabinet, he said.
The body would lay at the Town Hall here for public homage tomorrow, and then will taken it to his native place. The body will be laid to rest on Tuesday at Kokkur Attukunnu St Marys Jacobite Church, near his native place, he added.
Since, the Assembly session was going on, a decision about the proceeding would taken by Speaker G Karthikeyan as per the earlier precedents in this regard.
