Report on Kozhikode police firing handed over to CM

Wednesday, October 19, 2011: Additional chief secretary K Jayakumar has today submitted a report on the incident in which Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Radhakrishna Pillai opened fire on protesting SFI activists at Kozhikode Govt. engineering college.
The report was handed over to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday. Jayakumar had earlier visited Kozhikode and recorded the statements of Executive magistrate and police personnel in connection with this incident.

Sources said that the report justifies Assistant commissioner of Police (ACP) Radhakrishna pillai, who opened fire on the protesting SFI activists at West hill Engineering College. The report said that the ACP had not tried to endanger the students hence there is no need for disciplinary action against the police official, if needed a departmental-level probe can be conducted into the incident.
According to him the police was forced to open fire in order to bring the situation under control and to prevent any further violence.
According to reports the ACP had fired his service revolver on the SFI activists who were staging demonstration in connection with the Nirmal madhav issue, violating all norms.
The SFI activists were staging protest march to oust Nirmal Madhav, who was given admission in the West Hill college breaching all norms.
The protest in Kozhikode had not created a situation that warranted police firing. Contradictory to the police version the Tahsildar’s report points out that the ACP had not sought an approval from him.
The report submitted before the district collector clearly points out that the tahsildar had not given any direction to open police firing to disperse the agitated mob.
The report indicates that he was not entrusted with the duty of Executive Magistrate and that he had reached the spot as per the direction of the district collector.
