Soumya’s autopsy: Action likely against Dr. Unmesh

Monday, October 17, 2011: Action is most likely to be initiated against Dr Unmesh, an associate professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Thrissur Medical College, in connection with controversy over autopsy report of Soumya, who was killed after being pushed out of a moving train in Thrissur.
According to reports the Home department has begun a probe against Dr. Unmesh who had reiterated his statement that it was he who conducted the autopsy in favour of the defendant’s side.
A fast track Court on Wednesday issued a show cause notice to a junior doctor asking him to be present in the Court today in connection with the issue. The order was issued by Judge Ravindra Babu while considering a petition seeking for a direction to award punishment under section 193 of IPC to Unmesh.

Soumya, hailing from Manjakkad near Shornur, was attacked on February 1 this year when she was travelling in the ladies compartment of a local train from Ernakulam to Shornur.
She was pushed out of the train at Vallatholnagar railway station on the night of February 1 by the accused Govindaswamy, hailing from Tamil Nadu, and raped on the railtracks. She later succumbed to injuries.
The petitioner alleged that Unmesh had stated in the court, where the trial of the case is taking place, on October 10 that he had performed the postmortem examination of the body of Soumya and not the head of the Forensic Department, Sherley Vasu.
Unmesh had also alleged the report submitted by Vasu before the court was a “tampered” version of the original report given by him, the petitioner said.
The prosecution had earlier submitted the postmortem report by Vasu as the concrete evidence against the accused, Govindaswamy.
