State to open centre for minor victims of sexual abuse

Wednesday, October 19, 2011: The Kerala government has decided to set up a protection and rehabilitation centre for minor girls who are victims of sexual exploitation.
A meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy yesterday also decided to fast track probe and trial of sexual harassment cases, an official press release said.
The decision was also taken to bring in a policy for preventing atrocities on women and children, it said. The rehabilitation centre, coming up under the Social Welfare Department, would offer medical and legal aid to victims of sexual harassment and look after their education, vocational training and employment.
A facility for taking the statements of the victims through video-conferencing would be put in place and fast track courts set up to speed up trials.
