Income Tax sends notice to former CJI K.G. Balakrishnan's kin

KOCHI: Income Tax Department here has sent a demand notice to the son-in-law and daughter of former Chief Justice of India and National Human Rights Commission Chairman K.G. Balakrishnan, asking them to pay tax dues to the tune of Rs 2.2 crore for 2007-08 and 2009-10 assessment years.

IT sources said the notice sent to V C Sreenijan and his wife K B Sony, daughter of Balakrishnan, was based on an investigation by the department after they received a private complaint.

Sreenijan and his wife have been asked to pay the amount. If they wished to contend the assessment they could file an appeal before the Commissioner of Income Taxes or the appellate authority concerned, sources said.

They said there has been a significant increase in Sreenijan's assets since 2006 from his declared assets prior to that period.

A former Vice President of Youth Congress in Kerala, Sreenijan had unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections from Njarakkal constituency in the past.

He resigned from the party positions after the state government ordered a vigilance probe into alleged amassing of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
