THRISSUR: There are many people eager to call district collector to ask whether there is holiday for schools whenever there is heavy rain. Most of these caller’s wish is to get a holiday so that they could hide inside the bedsheet and sleep off peacefully. So, in case they get a holiday it is worth the call they make to the collector’s office!
Now, Thrissur collector Anupama IAS has got something to say. She says such mass telephone calls make the line busy and more emergency callers are unable to get through to the collector’s office.
*Reposting an old post for the impending rainy season*
"Dear brothers and sisters,
We are receiving a lot of calls these days requesting us to declare a holiday because of rains. We have criteria that have to be satisfied to declare a holiday - if they are met, trust us, we would declare a holiday, since we do not want to put any of you in harm's way.
But when you are collectively calling us, the phone lines are busy and genuine calls about drowning, missing persons etc. might not be able to get through.
You do have the freedom to call us when you are facing a difficulty. But with freedom comes responsibility. Even 30 seconds sometimes becomes a matter of life and death for a victim of rain havoc. So the next time you call us for a holiday, please be responsible and ensure that you are not getting in the way of someone who actually needs urgent help.
