KOTTAYAM: Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor is unwavering on his stand that it not necessary for travellers in the back seats of a car to wear seat belts. The minister said “it is not practical for people on the back seats to wear seat belts”.
“How is it possible to implement a traffic rule that doesn’t exist in other parts of India,” he quipped.
The minister said 80 percent of the cars running in the State do not have belts for their back seats. Such rules that would inconvenience the common man should not be implemented. Those who want to wear seat belt can wear it, others can avoid it. He also said that he had not been informed about Rishiraj Singh’s decision to quit the Transport Commissioner’s post.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has backed Singh. He said Singh was an efficient official and added that he was unaware of controversy surrounding the seat belt.
