Attappady: Govt assures steps to return adivasi land

Tuesday, September 20, 2011: The Kerala government today decided to take over two windmills set up on 85.21 acres of land belonging to tribals, after it was allegedly illegally occupied by a company in Palakkad district.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting that ongoing cases against Suzlon Energy Ltd for illegally occupying the land at Attapaddy would continue while the land be restored to the tribals.

The government was of the view that the windmills should be run by the Kerala State Electricity Board and the revenue accruing from it be shared with the tribals, he said. However, the tribals would have the final say on the matter, he said, adding that the government’s intention is only to benefit them.
The Vigilance probe initiated against the revenue officials who had helped the Suzlon company to encroach the adivasi land would continue. The adivasis will be provided with title deeds, CM said.
