2G issue: Pranab Mukherjee pacifies Chidambaram

Thursday, September 29, 2011: Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram today sought to put an end to the raging controversy over the Finance Ministry note on 2G spectrum with the Finance Minister distancing himself from the statement that sought to blame the Home Minister.
Pranab said “Policy of the government was a continuation of the policy set by the NDA government in 2003 and reiterated by TRAI.”

“A number of stories in media had appeared in January 2011 regarding the 2G scam. In the light of this, an inter-ministerial background paper encompassing all viewpoints was prepared by the finance ministry. This note did not reflect my views,” the finance minister said.
Mukherjee was addressing the media after a meeting with the Prime Minister, flanked by Union home minister P Chidambaram, telecom minister Kipal Sibal and law and justice minister Salman Kurshid.
Commenting on the statement of Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram said that he was with the statement made by his colleague. “I accept the statement made by Pranab. The matter is now closed,” said Chidambaram.
Earlier, it was a day of hectic meetings as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P Chidambaram. Congress president Sonia Gandhi also met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A.K. Antony in a bid to end the row arising out of a controversial finance ministry note on 2G spectrum.
