Banned pesticide’s use on the rise in T’puram

Friday, September 30, 2011: The use of a banned pesticide, Gramoxone is causing serious health problems for the local residents in Thiruvananthapuram, an ACV News investigation revealed on Friday.
According to this exclusive news report the pesticide is causing major health hazards for the residents in Puliyarakonam, Thannimoodu, Mayilamoodu, Kappivila and Nellimoodu areas.

This pesticide is being used in the rubber plantations and delivers fast, efficient contact weed control of a comprehensive spectrum of broadleaf weeds, sedges and grasses, the locals said.
But the wide spread use has triggered serious health issues for the locals including skin lesions, fever, respiratory and vision problems if inhaled, eye burns and vision problems after contact with eyes.
Gramoxone has been included in the list of banned pesticides issued by the state government two months ago. Many such pesticides which have been banned or severely restricted in some countries are in use in Kerala.
The local residents have filed a complaint to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the Health department authorities in connection with the issue.
