Waste disposal units to be made compulsory at hospitals, flats


Friday, September 30, 2011: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that steps will be taken to make waste disposal units compulsory at hospitals and flats as part of the ‘Waste-Free Kerala’ campaign. The use of bio-gas units at homes will be made wide-spread in the state.
The Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the ‘Waste-Free Kerala’ campaign at Kottayam on October 2. The campaign at Palakkad will be inaugurated by the Opposition Leader VS Achuthanandan on the same day.
A committee will be formed with Chief Minister at the state-level, ministers at the district-level, MLAs and Chairmen at the level of legislative assembly. Banks and public limited companies will be invited to sponsor the campaign.
About 75 percent subsidy will be given to each house for installing bio-gas plants. The cost of installing a bio-gas plant at house ranges from Rs 1500 to Rs 2500.
